Competitive advantage: significant reduction in installation work

“One genuine competitive advantage of our new outdoor storage system is that it comes completely prewired. On site, all the installer needs to do is build the foundations, insert the modules and connect the storage system, so the installation work is significantly reduced,” explains Simon Schandert, CTO and co-founder of Tesvolt. “This also prevents potential errors during installation and allows specialist partners to plan their time better.”

Storage systems for all applications – even simultaneously

“For many customers, it’s important that their storage system also work for future business models. With the TPS HV 80 E, they’re equipped for the future because they can use the system not only for peak shaving and self-consumption optimisation but also for more specialist requirements, such as control of charging stations and zero feed-in – and they can run various applications in parallel,” says Schandert.

The TPS HV 80 E is also suitable for ancillary services and arbitrage trading. This means that the storage system can be charged up from the utility grid at a cheap rate and discharged later when energy is expensive. “Prediction-based charging is sure to be of particular interest to customers with their own photovoltaic systems or dynamic electricity tariffs,” adds the Tesvolt founder.

Exceptionally efficient

Technologically, the new storage container is part of the proven E series, which Tesvolt launched a year ago. Like the rest of the E series, the TPS HV 80 E includes advanced Tesvolt battery modules – 22 cells of the latest-generation Samsung SDI for extra safety. The high energy density of the battery cells makes these storage systems exceptionally economical and space-saving, with a compact casing that measures 10 or 20 feet in length and a storage capacity ranging from 80 kWh to 1,280 kWh.

The TPS HV 80 E storage system also has a fully modular design – from the battery modules to the container – which makes it especially versatile. Customers can choose between two different energy management systems, while the Sunny Tripower Storage X three-phase battery inverter from SMA ensures super fast reaction and control times and a broad usable DC voltage range. The integrated air conditioning provides cooling or heating – depending on the weather – to ensure optimum performance.

Complete support for installation partners

Tesvolt offers its installation partners a full range of digital services – from storage configuration and ordering to commissioning and after-sales support. Partners can receive training on the system and configuration, as well as support with commissioning. Tesvolt also offers a hotline for personal consultation.

Tesvolt will be presenting the new container storage system at booth 110 in hall B2 from 19 to 21 June 2024.

Schiff liegt im Hafen

First German federal work vessel with pure electric drive

PRESS RELEASE – Lutherstadt Wittenberg, 04.03.2024

E-Spatz with Tesvolt technology wins award //

The Spatz, the tried and tested work vessel of the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), was the first work vessel to be equipped with an electric drive. Tesvolt supplied the battery storage system for this and worked closely with shipping manufacturers to tailor the ship’s electric propulsion system to its needs. Now the “E-Spatz” has been awarded the title “Inland Ship of the Year”. In the coming years, 100 more work vessels in the Spatz fleet are to be equipped with zero-emission engines.

Press images are available here: https://www.tesvolt.com/en/press/e-spatz-is-barge-of-the-year.html

Flagship project for clean waterways and climate protection

“There is no alternative to the electrification of shipping on the path to cleaner waters and reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Shipping’s potential to meet climate targets is still underestimated. In fact, there are many applications for electric drives in inland navigation,” says Michael Miebach, Business Development Manager Maritime Solutions at Tesvolt. The Hansa editorial team’s “Inland Ship of the Year” award honours not only the technological achievements of the E-Spatz but also the commitment and collaboration of all the companies involved and the WSV in this pioneering project.

To tailor electric ship propulsion to the needs of the E-Spatz, Tesvolt has worked with Kadlec & Brödlin, one of the oldest marine integrators, and with Jastram, a supplier of high-quality rudder propellers. All components for the propulsion system are perfectly coordinated with each other. The electrification of the Spatz was carried out by the Bolle shipyard from Saxony-Anhalt.

One charge is enough for three days

The work vessel with its innovative propulsion system ensures traffic safety on the rivers and canals of the west German canal network. Construction and maintenance work on the waterways is just as much a part of its duties as bearing work. Unlike its diesel-powered predecessor, the E-Spatz is powered solely by two 80 kW (109 hp) electric motors. The batteries have a capacity of 980 kWh. There are seven water-cooled battery modules with a capacity of 10 kWh each arranged in 14 racks. Each of the 98 modules is constantly monitored by the battery management system. This ensures that the temperature, state of charge and health of the built-in cells is always clear. The batteries are charged at night via a shore power cable connection with a maximum output of 125 A located at the rear of the E-Spatz. Depending on the type of work, the E-Spatz can be operated for up to three days on a single battery charge.

Launch of a future-oriented fleet

With more than 600 vessels, WSV is the largest inland shipowner in Germany. The WSV currently operates around 130 vessels of the Spatz class alone, which will be fitted with zero-emission propulsion systems in the future. The first E-Spatz marks the beginning of a new generation of environmentally friendly ships.

Maximum storage capacity in a small space

“A real advantage for our shipping customers is that our energy storage systems are considerably lighter than conventional ones, thanks to their high energy density of 6.5 kg per kWh. This is particularly important for ships, as it allows a higher-capacity battery storage system to be installed. This means that ships have a correspondingly longer range and can cover further distances electrically,” says Kilian Hoffmann, Business Development Manager for Maritime Solutions at Tesvolt. Tesvolt’s DNV-certified battery storage systems are also among the safest on the market thanks to their integrated fire suppression system.

About Tesvolt AG – Maritime Solutions

With its Maritime Solutions division, Tesvolt AG is a leading provider of innovative energy storage solutions for the maritime industry. The company is developing advanced lithium-ion battery systems for a zero-emission future for the shipping industry. Maritime Solutions is an important part of Tesvolt AG, one of the innovation and market leaders for commercial and industrial energy storage solutions in Germany and Europe. In addition to Hithium’s progress toward its broader environmental targets, the event highlighted the efficiency increases and resulting cost decreases of its smart manufacturing developments. These also underscore the company’s sustainability commitment to Goal 7, subsection 3, and its focus on improving energy efficiency. Together with the tour of its facility, Hithium also offered its Eco-Day visitors a preview of the company’s new technology, including the manufacturer’s first small-capacity cell designed specifically to lift people out of energy poverty along with a groundbreaking utility-scale product.

In his Eco-Day presentation of the company’s product roadmap and business strategy, Hithium chairman Jason Wang said: “We’re focused on making the energy transition affordable, to help accelerate the adoption of clean power. Our new technology and our battery production innovations all serve this goal. When we lower LCOS for partners, we can make energy storage more bankable for asset owners. When we lower the cost for end consumers living in energy poverty, they gain more access to more reliable clean power. For Eco-Day, we’re celebrating this progress on the production and the product fronts.”

Sneak peek: World’s first small-capacity cell designed for affordability for off-grid energy consumers

Hithium revealed a new universal 1kWh battery cell, the “Hero EE,” for use in areas where there is no reliable grid and millions of households or small businesses have only few or low-power appliances. Their basic needs can thus be met through a small-scale, affordable energy storage product. The cell can be charged with an extra low current from solar power or a local microgrid and aims to increase access to electricity for people where energy supply is not yet reliable or affordable.

With the new product, Hithium is targeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals on both the fronts, of access to affordable energy and of upgrading technology for countries where many still live in energy poverty.

Breaking out of EV-scale with first truly utility-focused battery product

As part of the company’s Eco-Day celebration, Hithium unveiled the first LFP battery design for long-duration storage of four to eight hours, called “MIC 1130Ah”. The new product, a sample of which will be available in the first quarter of 2024, will represent unprecedented new battery technology for the utility-scale energy storage market, breaking the 1000Ah barrier for the first time.

Shift to highly automated smart manufacturing delivers 25% cost reduction

Playing a central role in Hithium’s production expansion plans, the smart facility at Chongqing achieves a ca. 30% increase in efficiency over typical “Manufacturing 3.0” standards. The plant features a significantly higher level of automation that enables the company to cut the cost of battery production there by a quarter.

Battery manufacturer Hithium opens new intelligent production plant

PRESS RELEASE – Chongqing, China, 08.12.2023:

//

Stationary energy storage specialist Hithium has launched the first phase of 28GWh in new production capacity, as its facility in Chongqing, China, goes online. The new plant is designed in line with or exceeding intelligent “manufacturing 4.0” standards, including a 26% increase in automated processes over the typical “manufacturing 3.0” production line.

Press picture here: https://hithium.com/en/chongqing-production-plant-opening

Hithium’s automation gains at Chongqing have resulted in an overall efficiency jump of 30%, as well as cost reductions amounting to a quarter of production overhead, delivering a significant lead in manufacturing competitiveness. Built with an investment of $1.8 billion, the site covers 800,000 m2 and is located in the Tongliang high-tech zone. The new capacity aims at helping to meet global demand for what is expected to be 720GW of energy storage by 2030.*

Hithium President Jason Wang said, “Intelligent manufacturing is the key to more efficient and more cost-effective battery production. This new plant points the way to lower LCOS, and with it, an affordable energy transition. We’ve achieved production cost reductions of 25% at our new Chongqing facility — and it’s just the beginning.”

Hithium has invested in developing one of the most advanced production lines in the world, since mass production of battery cells is unusually demanding, given the highly complex manufacturing technologies required. Deviations in production can affect the performance, durability, and even safety of battery cells, with the smallest impurities or irregularities able to damage cells during operation and trigger further defects. Hithium’s production lines thus have thousands of process control points monitored in real time, of which a significant number are directly associated with a certified quality management system.

Automated manufacturing at this level particularly supports the consistency of Hithium products, with the new plant able to provide a battery cell capacity consistency at or under 3Ah. Additionally, for cells from the new facility, the voltage difference is within 3mV, the product discharge consistency is at or under 10mV, and the product process yield is over 95%.

* According to a recent BNEF analysis of the global energy storage market.

Tesvolt battery storage systems are among the safest in Europe

PRESS RELEASE – Wittenberg, 20.11.2023:

New certificate confirms electrical and functional safety +++ Tesvolt demands stricter safety tests for battery storage systems //

TÜV Rheinland has also taken a close look at the latest battery storage system generation from Tesvolt. The high-voltage storage systems TS HV 30 E, TS HV 50 E and TS HV 80 E passed the safety tests. Tesvolt is one of the few manufacturers on the market that can verify the safety of its energy storage systems for commerce and industry with certification from the independent testing institute. The IEC 62619 certification confirms both the electrical and functional safety of Tesvolt’s products, which are available throughout Europe.

Press images: https://www.tesvolt.com/en/press/tesvolt-battery-storage-systems-are-among-the-safest-in-europe.html

Catch-up work is required in the storage system industry

“Unfortunately, product safety testing is not yet a matter of course within the storage system industry. Numerous manufacturers economise with regard to certificates and more comprehensive safety testing,” reports Roman Brück, Head of the Components, Power Electronics and Certification Department at TÜV Rheinland. “Tesvolt, on the other hand, takes the subject of safety very seriously. We were involved right from the start of development and took a very close look at the new storage system series – in other words, in addition to testing functional and electrical safety, we also carried out fire tests, abuse tests and combination tests which check the interaction of the individual components.”

Tesvolt demands safety tests for all manufacturers

“I think that all companies are under pressure to optimise their costs. Globalisation and the current economic situation have certainly played a part in this. With the rapidly increasing number of manufacturers, particularly from China, there are some who unfortunately make cutbacks in areas where it is not immediately noticeable. For example, regarding voluntary certification and testing or in the quality and durability of individual components,” explains Simon Schandert, co-founder and CTO at Tesvolt. “However, safety must always be given top priority.”

Tesvolt, together with other quality manufacturers in bodies such as the German Energy Storage Systems Association (BVES), is thus campaigning for additional certification and testing to be made mandatory for all manufacturers.

Multi-stage safety concept

Tesvolt pursues a multi-stage safety concept. The company carries out partially automated complete cyclic conditioning at its production site in Lutherstadt Wittenberg: Every battery module is fully charged and discharged and tested for any irregularities with regard to temperature, voltage and internal resistance. Finally, fully automated end-of-line inspections ensure maximum safety, with every battery cell tested and less efficient battery modules automatically removed.

All Tesvolt energy storage systems are also designed with multiple in-built safety features. The battery cells are subject to six safety mechanisms. For example, a safety fuse will interrupt the electrical current if the unit experiences a short circuit or overcurrent. In the event of excess pressure, a safety valve on the cell opens in order to ensure that pressure compensation takes place. A sturdy aluminium housing protects every cell from mechanical damage.

Tesvolt’s A and E series battery storage systems are tested in accordance with the international IEC standards: 62619, 62620, 61000, 61010, 61508 and UN38.3. Tesvolt is also certified in accordance with ISO 9001:2015 for successful implementation of quality management throughout the company.

The TS HV 30-80 E series battery storage systems are certified for all European countries. Certification for the UK is expected to follow in the first quarter of 2024.

You can find more information about Tesvolt’s safety concept here.

aleo presents new premium in-roof panels

PRESS RELEASE – 04.10.2023:

Aleo launches the new LEO Sol 385-400 W halfcut-cell panels. //

The high-performance panel can be integrated into the roof surface with the Solrif photovoltaic in-roof system from Ernst Schweizer AG. In this process, the conventional roof tile is replaced by the solar roof tile, creating a high-quality and homogeneous look on the roof. The glass-foil panel with black backsheet consists of 108 halfcut-cells and achieves a peak power of 400 W. The new size variant can be combined with the other panel of the series and thus enables better utilization of the roof area.

Combinable and suitable for partial and full roof coverings

The new monocrystalline premium panel LEO Sol is 1,795 mm wide and thus complements the proven 96-halfcut-cell premium in-roof panels LEO Sol 340-355W, which has a width of 1,607 mm. Both LEO Sol panels can be connected to each other in a string.

In addition to partial roofs, full roof coverings are also possible: Solrif blind panels offer design options for homogeneously integrating corners and edges around chimneys, skylights or dormers into the roof. Due to the free lower edge of the frameless panels, the Solrif system is self-cleaning and requires virtually no maintenance.

Resistant to high compressive loads and radiant heat
Just like its smaller sister product, the new LEO Sol is also certified according to the latest IEC standards 61215 and 61730. In the comprehensive tests, both product sizes were successfully certified for a compressive load of 8100 Pa (test load), so they can withstand particularly heavy snow and wind loads.

In addition, LEO Sol is tested and certified as resistant to flying fire and radiant heat (hard roofing), in addition, the panel remains free of snailtrails and can withstand hailstones of up to 25 mm in diameter.

Quality from Germany

Quality and sustainability go hand in hand in the production of all aleo panels: The premium LEO Sol is produced in Prenzlau with 100 % renewable energy and comes with a product and performance guarantee of 25 years.

18.3 MWh: Tesvolt and Green Energy 3000 are expanding their collaboration

PRESS RELEASE – Wittenberg, 07.08.2023:

//

The international project developer Green Energy 3000 and Tesvolt, one of the innovation and market leaders for commercial and industrial energy storage solutions, are continuing their collaboration with the launch of their fourth joint project. This involves deployment of Tesvolt battery containers in a new solar farm near Braunschweig, Northern Germany. The solar farm will supply green electricity to around 5,000 households, while simultaneously reducing the load on the utility grid.

Four solar farms with a total of 18.3 MWh

The fourth joint battery storage system project will see Tesvolt deliver two TPS-E storage containers with a total of 10 MWh of energy and 4 MW of output to Gardessen, near Braunschweig in Lower Saxony. The storage containers are to be connected to a solar farm with an output of 12 MWp. Pairing photovoltaics with a battery storage system helps create a more reliable and clima-friendly energy supply in the region. The project is being funded by the government as part of its innovation tendering scheme with which the German federal government regularly puts funded quantities of renewable energy production out for tender.

Tesvolt and Green Energy 3000 have already launched three similar projects within Germany over the past two years: battery storage systems totalling 8.3 MWh have been connected to solar farms in Saxony’s Großschirma, Brandenburg’s Maulbeerwalde and Bavaria’s Schnaittenbach. When combined with the current project, this means that the two partners have added a total of around 18.3 MWh in storage capacity to the utility grid.

The ban on bidirectional charging must be lifted

The battery storage system is not just intended to reduce the load on the utility grid; the energy it stores is also sold via arbitrage transactions, for instance, or via participation in the operating reserve markets.

Legislators need to take action to ensure the innovation tender remains an appealing tool for project owners. The current stipulation that battery storage systems are not allowed to store electricity from the grid, i.e. that they cannot run bidirectionally, must be changed as a matter of urgency. This is the only way for the available storage capacity to be used to full effect,” says Philipp Schreiber, project manager for large-scale storage systems at Tesvolt. “This would also add a clear additional incentive for investing in energy storage, as operators would be able to boost their profits by selling their storage capacity. In turn, this would quieten demand from project developers for get higher feed-in tariffs.

A stable supply of green energy

We’re delighted to be continuing our brilliant partnership with Green Energy 3000,” says Simon Schandert, Tesvolt’s CTO. “With our expertise in battery storage systems and Green Energy 3000’s project development know-how, we’re jointly contributing to a sustainable energy supply and showing the way toward the energy transition.

We managed to technically optimise the projects through our constructive collaboration with Tesvolt, which continued after the battery storage system had been commissioned. The partnership between Green Energy 3000 and Tesvolt has now proved its worth and delivered a wealth of valuable insights for both parties,” says Andreas Renker, CEO at Green Energy 3000.

Durable and specialised in ancillary services

Tesvolt’s TPS-E battery container boasts high energy density in three different container sizes, 100% depth of discharge and a planned lifespan of 30 years. Thanks to Tesvolt’s intelligent battery management system, the TPS-E stabilises the integration of renewable energy sources into the utility grid to enable a reliable supply of clean energy. The system can be adapted to any purpose – self-consumption optimisation, peak shaving, arbitrage trading on spot markets or the provision of operating reserves.

BESS manufacturer Hithium debuts at EES, signs with Powin

PRESS RELEASE – Munich, 16. June 2023

//

Battery energy storage manufacturer Hithium appeared for the first time as an exhibitor at The Smarter E’s EES trade fair alongside Intersolar in Munich this week. The company announced its entry into the European market last month with an office opening in Munich, just as it surpassed 9 GWh total battery capacity delivered since the company was founded in 2019.

Hithium presented lithium-ion battery products including its 4 MWh 300 Ah-cell based container, featuring less than 2% degradation in the first 1000 cycles at the cell level (reduced from the industry-typical 6%). A main goal in developing the new container was to improve capacity usage and thus the investment rate of return in the initial three years of use. The product also offers a lifespan over 10% longer than a typical 280 Ah-based system.

New agreement with Powin starts with 1.5 GWh

The company has also signed a new agreement with North American energy storage solutions provider Powin LLC (Powin) for the delivery of Hithium energy storage products. 1.5 GWh of battery capacity has been confirmed, with a further 3.5 GWh in upside potential.

Jason Eschenbrenner, Powin Global VP of Procurement, said, “Our customers expect us to deliver maximum safety and performance, and to do it cost-effectively. That’s what Hithium products achieve, and we look forward to taking this step together.”

The SolBrid: Extra flexible new Steca inverter for up to 4 PV strings

PRESS RELEASE – Memmingen, 07.06.2023

//

With the new StecaGrid inverter SolBrid, Steca presents an exceptionally flexible and powerful three-phase 10 kW hybrid inverter. The SolBrid has up to four MPP trackers, which makes it suitable for photovoltaic installations on complex roof layouts. With a battery charging current of up to 25 A, it can be connected to a wide range of different high-voltage battery types. The inverter can be combined with the StecaGrid Switch to shift into stand-alone mode and supply a building with emergency power in the case of a blackout. That way the energy consumers in the house can seamlessly use power from the PV installation or a battery.

Future-proof, thanks to flexible PV input ports

“The SolBrid provides installers with a particularly flexible solution for a multitude of system variants, including complex roof layouts, different module and battery types, and standby power supply. The new inverter covers a wide range of applications,” says KATEK’s Dr. Peter Grabs.

Depending on the product variant, two or four MPP trackers enable a maximum photovoltaic input current of 15 Ampere each and an input voltage of up to 1,000 Volts. The first unit of the product range has an output of 10 kW.

App control and variable interfaces

Installation of the new inverter is possible via an app and users can access the operating data via mobile device. As a result of its IP65 standard housing, the inverter can also be installed outdoors.

A battery management system for BYD storage systems and an RS485 interface have been integrated (with further storage systems to be added). The RS485 enables the StecaGrid Switch circuit breaker and additional energy meters to be connected.

StecaGrid Switch for even more functions

Installing the StecaGrid Switch together with the SolBrid adds even more functions: The intelligent circuit breaker enables emergency power operation as well as real time measurement of energy consumption with deviation rate of just 2%, for accurate monitoring.
