Long wait to connect large storage systems to the grid, unlike smaller systems

Long wait to connect large storage systems to the grid, unlike smaller systems

Combined power plant consisting of many small commercial storage systems makes the electricity grid more flexible

Berlin, Wittenberg/Germany, 7 July 2025 – Distribution grid operators are receiving a large number of requests to connect large-scale energy storage systems to the medium- and high-voltage grid. This has been published by Bayernwerk Netz, Bavaria’s largest distribution system operator, and Mitnetz Strom. Due to the necessary grid expansion measures, the waiting period for applicants is usually at least five years. Start-up TESVOLT ENERGY has found a solution that can quickly connect battery storage solutions to the utility grid. It gives commerce and industry – which usually already have a sufficiently large connection to the low-voltage grid – the previously lacking incentive to connect smaller energy storage systems of 100 kWh or more to the utility grid.

Influx of applications for grid connections from large-scale battery storage systems

“The number of applicants who want to connect large-scale storage systems to the utility grid is continuing to rise. This is no different to the other large distribution system operators,” reports Stephan Kilz, Head of Generation Plants for Individual Customers at Mitnetz Strom, one of the largest distribution system operators in eastern Germany. “Bringing more flexibility to the utility grid using battery storage systems is important. However, this usually requires grid expansion measures, so it often takes several years before a new large-scale storage system or battery park can be connected to the utility grid.”

Bayernwerk Netz, Bavaria’s largest grid operator, is also reporting the very high number of connection requests for large-scale storage systems on its homepage. For the medium- and high-voltage grid, the capacity for grid connections has already been exhausted to such an extent that it will only be possible to connect storage systems of more than 300 kW in five years’ time or more.

Until now, there has been no incentive for smaller battery storage systems to connect to the utility grid

“We urgently need much more storage capacity in the electricity grid so that renewable energy suppliers do not have to be limited in the event of strong sunlight and strong wind. Instead of building a mind-boggling number of new gas-fired power plants to make the electricity grid more flexible, we should focus on climate-friendly solutions,” says Sebastian Kratz, Managing Director of TESVOLT ENERGY. “Commercial and industrial companies have enormous potential for bringing urgently needed flexibility to the utility grid with battery storage systems. So far, other than the big battery park operators, they haven’t had the opportunity to find a good trader that trades their small storage capacities on the exchange. They have therefore been excluded from energy trading.”

Network of smaller storage systems makes lucrative energy trading possible

TESVOLT ENERGY is enabling commerce and industry to engage in lucrative front-of-the-meter energy trading for the first time. The company integrates battery storage systems of 100 kWh or more into a pool. In doing so, many smaller storage systems form a virtual power plant, whose capacity is traded by renowned traders Enspired, Entrix and The Mobility House. The prerequisite is that commercial enterprises have a grid connection point with an output of at least 50 kW. On-site planning, installation and maintenance of battery storage systems are handled by specialist partners trained and certified by TESVOLT.

A one-of-a-kind first: trader competition for higher revenue

“We bring our traders into competition with each other. The energy trader whose trades achieve the highest revenues with the least intensive operation of the storage systems gets to manage the most battery systems in our pool,” explains Anshoo Pandey, who is heading the new company together with Sebastian Kratz. “This business model is unique on the market so far. This allows us to generate higher revenues for our customers.” Software developed by TESVOLT ENERGY ensures careful operation of the battery storage systems. TESVOLT storage systems that use this software therefore also have a 15-year performance guarantee. This far exceeds the usual market performance guarantees.

Collaboration with grid operators

“We are also prepared to respond to the requirements of grid operators and operate storage systems in a grid-neutral manner or in a grid-supporting manner at specific times – i.e. not feeding electricity from the storage systems into the utility grid when renewables are supplying a lot of electricity. Or using our storage systems to absorb excess electricity from the utility grid,” says Kratz. “Using our software and redispatch interface, we can implement this technically straight away and are already talking to grid operators about specific timescales and restrictions for charging and discharging our battery storage systems. After all, we are all driven by the goal of getting as much renewable electricity as possible into the utility grid. Climate protection is not a luxury item that we cannot afford right now. In the current political debate about gas and other fossil fuels, people often ignore that the costs of climate change are enormous.”

TESVOLT OCEAN expands battery system portfolio for clean shipping

TESVOLT OCEAN expands battery system portfolio for clean shipping

Exhibitor at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2025

Lübeck, Amsterdam, 16 June 2025 – TESVOLT OCEAN, manufacturer of high-performance battery storage solutions for inland and maritime shipping, is expanding its product portfolio. The German Norwegian company will be presenting its two new battery systems ‘Kaptein NMC Compass’ and ‘Kaptein NMC Compass Core’ for the first time at the Electric & Hybrid trade fair in Amsterdam from 24 to 26 June. The Compass is particularly light and compact. The Compass Core is just as compact but is also optimised for price-sensitive projects. This complements the manufacturer’s Kaptein series, which was launched last autumn with the high-performance ‘Kaptein NMC Navigator’. Thanks to their disruptive technology, all three storage solutions are characterised by further unique selling points.

Optimised for smaller vessels and retrofits

‘We are continuously developing our battery systems – based on customer feedback and practical requirements,’ explains Kilian Hoffmann, CCO at TESVOLT OCEAN. ‘Together, Navigator, Compass Core and Compass cover a wide range of requirements – from high-performance propulsion to retrofitting ships with very limited installation space.’

With a length of 60.5 cm and a height of 14.9 cm, the new storage solutions fit into almost any niche on a ship. And at 5 and 5.9 kg per kWh respectively, they are significantly lighter than other standard batteries on the market, which weigh at least 7 kg per kWh.

Like the Navigator battery modules, the new Compass and Compass Core battery modules can be installed individually and at any angle in the ship. The vibration-resistant battery modules can also be installed on the floor and then walked on. Thanks to their low weight of 75 or 86 kg, the battery modules can be carried by two people and installed in areas of the ship that are difficult to access. A crane is therefore not required for installation. The battery system is designed so that cooling by the ambient air is sufficient – this also simplifies installation and reduces maintenance costs.

Fast charging with 4 C

‘Many ship owners find the charging times of commercially available batteries too long. Most marine-approved batteries don’t even have a continuous C-rate of 2 C,’ reports Kent Thoresen, CTO of TESVOLT OCEAN. At 4 C, our entire Kaptein series offers the highest continuous C-rate available in the maritime industry to date. For ship owners, this means significantly shorter loading times and therefore less downtime in harbour. This is important, because only a moving ship earns money.’

Compass Core for particularly price-sensitive projects

The Compass Core was developed for ship projects where the budget is particularly limited. At 5.9 kg per kWh, it is slightly heavier than the Compass and Navigator models, but correspondingly cheaper. The battery system is due to be launched on the market in the 3rd quarter of this year.

Compass for particularly weight-sensitive projects

‘With its 5 kg per kWh, the Compass is our absolute lightweight hero. It is therefore suitable for all ship projects in which the weight of the battery system plays a particularly important role,’ Hoffmann continues. ‘The Navigator, on the other hand, still has the highest performance and therefore the longest range.’ The Compass should be available at the beginning of next year.

Significant demand for electric drives

‘The demand for sophisticated battery systems for clean ship propulsion systems is huge, which was also very clear at the Maritime Industry trade fair in Gorinchem,’ says Michael Miebach, Key Account Manager at TESVOLT OCEAN. This is not surprising, as more and more harbours are no longer allowing ships without clean propulsion to enter. ‘Once again, we have realised that our Kaptein series offers real solutions to a whole range of problems that operators currently face when powering their ships.’

TESVOLT and Samsung to collaborate on cybersecure battery systems for public utilities

TESVOLT and Samsung to collaborate on cybersecure battery systems for public utilities

Lutherstadt Wittenberg/Germany, Seoul/South Korea, 3 June 2025 – TESVOLT, a leading European full-service provider of innovative energy storage solutions for public utilities and commerce, is collaborating with Samsung SDI to provide public utilities with a particularly secure, state-of-the-art battery container and comprehensive project management on site. Data servers in Germany and KRITIS-capable software are designed to effectively protect the new battery storage solution against cyber attacks. In addition, a world-first thermal runaway propagation prevention system ensures it’s a safe investment. The new SBB 1.5 battery container with 5.26 MWh storage capacity will be compatible with various European inverters and will be launched with exceptional performance and guarantee features. With the new energy storage solution, public utilities can also reliably provide grid services and participate in energy trading.

Press imageshttps://www.tesvolt.com/en/press/tesvolt-and-samsung-to-collaborate-on-cybersecure-battery-systems-for-public-utilities.html

Cybersecurity is more important than ever for public utilities

“With larger battery systems in particular, there is a risk that they will simply be switched off from other countries – e.g. due to political conflicts. This makes it all the more important at the moment that our energy provider’s energy storage systems are as secure as possible against cyber attacks,” explains Daniel Hannemann, CEO and co-founder at TESVOLT. “Our intelligent battery control system is designed to support cybersecurity.” Storing system data on servers at locations in Germany also ensures greater protection against cyber attacks.

Local partner for low downtime

“We hear repeatedly from public utilities and EPCs that they feel stranded by Chinese manufacturers in the event of technical problems. But the longer the battery systems are down for, the greater the financial loss for the operator,” reports Sebastian Jänig, Key Account Manager for utilities at TESVOLT Projects. “In contrast, we provide public utilities with everything from a single source: a particularly high-performance large-scale storage system and our team of experts for large-scale projects, which not only builds the battery parks but also monitors them down to cell level, carries out maintenance and is on site to help the public utilities in the event of any problems.” This, together with the specially developed TESVOLT Energy Controller Pro plant control system and integrated EZA controller, means battery parks can be run profitably and with very low downtime.

Making large-scale storage systems more secure and more economical

“Samsung has by far the most experience with large storage system projects on the market. This is also evident in the battery storage systems: they really suit the needs of the system operators,” continues Jänig. “As an example, Samsung is offering a unique solution to prevent battery fires. Its EDI system, short for Enhanced Direct Injection System, is an active anti-propagation system that detects overheating at the cell level and stops it automatically by injecting a cooling agent into the affected battery module.” Samsung also uses long-lasting and high-performance NCA battery cells. Very quiet cooling units result in a low noise level of only 65 decibels (dBA).
“Supplying an outstanding storage system is no longer enough these days. In order to achieve good profitability over the entire lifespan, it is important that large storage systems have the lowest possible downtime,” reports Dirk Kaisers, ESS Director at Samsung SDI. With its intelligent EZA controller, TESVOLT looks deep into the storage systems, right down to the cell level and manages them in a way that is profitable. That ensures that the large storage systems are more secure and more economical than most others.

Exceptional guarantees

The new SBB 1.5 battery container will be launched on the market with a guarantee of up to 20 years and a flexible performance guarantee. The round-trip efficiency is guaranteed to be higher than 95%, and the annual availability guarantee is at least 97%.

“Project lead times are usually around one year. The SBB 1.5 can therefore be ordered immediately, with delivery expected in the second quarter of next year,” explains Hannemann.

TESVOLT presents new stackable domestic and commercial storage system

Press release

TESVOLT presents new stackable domestic and commercial storage system

“Made in Europe” funding bonus for the new storage system

Wittenberg/Germany, 13 May 2025 – TESVOLT, a leading European full-service provider of innovative energy storage system solutions for commerce and industry, presented its new battery storage solution TESVOLT TAYTAN at the ees Europe trade fair in Munich. The system consists of battery modules that simply plug into each other – with no external cables. Between three and ten modules can be stacked, depending on the desired storage capacity. The battery modules for the new energy storage system are manufactured by TESVOLT itself in its new gigafactory in Wittenberg. This means that in future, project planners who use the TESVOLT TAYTAN can apply for the “Made in Europe” funding bonus. The battery system is designed to work with different inverters, while built-in Infineon chips protect it against cyber attacks. A 12-year performance guarantee ensures investment security.

Press images: https://www.tesvolt.com/en/press/tesvolt-presents-new-stackable-domestic-and-commercial-storage-system.html

Produced in Germany

‘Although the new storage system is produced in Germany, the pricing is in the same ballpark as comparable Chinese storage systems. We can do this because our new gigafactory in Wittenberg enables high-volume production with the sophisticated manufacturing processes we have developed’,  explains Simon Schandert, CTO and co-founder of TESVOLT AG. ’One major advantage we have over Chinese storage system providers is that we offer on-site service and we also have all the spare parts on hand in our Wittenberg facility. We never leave our specialist partners hanging when problems arise.’

More funding for “Made in Europe”

In Austria, projects with battery storage systems manufactured in Europe will receive up to 20% more funding starting 23 June. This is intended to boost Europe as an industrial hub. ’We expect other European countries to follow suit,’ added Schandert.

Protection against cyberattacks

‘These days it is particularly important that battery storage systems are safe from cyber attacks. Batteries are considered critical infrastructure, but unfortunately, the risk of battery systems simply being switched off remotely or third parties gaining access to sensitive data is very real in the current political situation,’ says Daniel Hannemann, CEO and Co-founder of TESVOLT. ‘That’s why we use Infineon chips, which offer the highest security against cyber attacks on the market.’

Fully modular for smaller commercial operations and residential construction

Each battery module has a storage capacity of 6.25 kWh. The TESVOLT TAYTAN starts at three modules, which equates to a total capacity of 18.75 kWh. A maximum of 10 modules can be stacked on top of each other, which means the new storage system can reach a total capacity of 62.5 kWh. Up to four battery storage systems can be operated in parallel via an inverter.

Passive cooling

A further advantage is that the new battery storage system doesn’t require an active cooling system. The battery modules release their heat to the metal casing, so they are cooled by the ambient temperature. The TESVOLT TAYTAN can also be operated without an active heating system. The storage system can be operated at ambient temperatures of -20 to 50 degrees and is suitable for outdoor use.

The TESVOLT TAYTAN has an exceptionally robust design, and its metal casing meets the requirements of IP55, a high degree of protection. The LFP cells are particularly safe and the intelligent battery management system ensures high performance and safety. The storage system works with selected AC-based inverters and hybrid inverters from a range of manufacturers. Production is scheduled to start later this year. In the medium term, the battery storage system can then be used for lucrative energy trading.

TESVOLT presents new “economic miracle” battery storage system with high-temperature cells

Outdoor commercial storage systems for lucrative energy trading

Wittenberg, Germany, 25 March 2025 – TESVOLT, a leading European full-service provider of innovative energy storage system solutions for commerce and industry, presents its new outdoor battery storage system solution TESVOLT Forton at the ees Europe trade fair in Munich from 7 to 9 May. It is the company’s first system to use high-temperature cells based on LFP technology, doesn’t require liquid cooling and paves the way for profitable energy trading for commerce and industry. A performance guarantee of 15 years at two full cycles per day ensures a safe investment. Commercial enterprises need nothing more than a grid connection point with an output of at least 50 kW to use the battery system for highly lucrative energy trading.

Press images and product data sheet:

Very fast return on investment

“Commerce and industry want a very fast return on investment. With our new battery system, the investment usually pays off after just a few years if it takes part in energy trading,” explains Simon Schandert, Co-Founder and CTO of TESVOLT AG. “There’s a good reason we call it an ‘economic miracle’ – it has never been so economical to operate a commercial storage system. In technical terms, you can only achieve this with a highly robust battery storage system, one that can be charged and discharged several times a day over many years.”

High-temperature cells in battery storage systems for the first time

To make the new, scalable battery system as resilient and durable as possible, TESVOLT is using high-temperature cells for the first time. “These cells require less cooling than commercially available LFP cells. At the same time, they have an even longer lifespan,” Schandert continues. “Another special feature is that it doesn’t require liquid cooling. This saves the customer half-yearly maintenance, and any service work can also be carried out by installers who are not certified for handling environmentally hazardous substances – as these are contained in most coolants.”

Depending on the desired total storage capacity, up to 16 of the new 92 kW storage systems are interconnected on site, enabling them to achieve up to 1.5 MW.

Enabling energy trading for commerce and industry

With the new TESVOLT Forton and together with its new spin-off TESVOLT Energy, TESVOLT AG is offering commerce and industry the opportunity to participate in energy trading and reap profits at last. Until now, it has been very difficult for operators of commercial storage systems to find a trader to trade their smaller storage capacities on the electricity exchange, or they have only been able to take part on less lucrative terms. TESVOLT Energy is changing this by adding battery storage systems to a pool, as the numerous smaller storage systems are only of interest for energy trading when bundled together. The start-up works with Germany’s most renowned traders and puts them into competition with each other – for the first time ever. For customers, this means particularly high revenues and less risk.

TESVOLT Energy uses intelligent software developed in-house to control the battery storage systems in the pool so that they generate the greatest possible revenue with the least intensive operations.

Security plays an important part

“Ultimately, we no longer offer just a battery storage system, but a compelling investment together with TESVOLT Energy. Commerce and industry no longer even need to invest in PV installations; they just need a grid connection point with output of at least 50 kW and our new battery system,” reports Daniel Hannemann, Co-Founder and CEO of TESVOLT AG. Here, investment security is just as important as cybersecurity. “If you choose the trading option, we will give you a performance guarantee for 15 years at two cycles a day – that’s almost 11,000 guaranteed full cycles. The market standard is only 3,000 to 4,000 guaranteed full cycles. We can offer this because the intelligent software from TESVOLT Energy ensures that the storage system is operated for utmost profit, but with the least intensity. This makes the investment particularly safe,” continues Hannemann. Integrated smoke, heat and gas sensors, including an alarm and aerosol extinguishing system, also ensure maximum safety.

Exhibition stand at ees Europe

At ees Europe, Europe’s largest trade fair for batteries and energy storage systems, TESVOLT and TESVOLT Energy will be presenting the new TESVOLT Forton battery storage system and the highly profitable energy trading model at stand B2.110.

TESVOLT MARITIME spin-off presents milestone for clean shipping

PRESS RELEASE – Lutherstadt Wittenberg/Germany, 10.9.2024

//

Lutherstadt Wittenberg/Germany, 10.9.2024 – TESVOLT has announced a new joint venture, TESVOLT OCEAN. The TESVOLT Maritime Solutions division merged with Ocean Batteries from Norway last week. The innovation and market leader TESVOLT is focused on commercial and industrial energy storage solutions in Germany and Europe. Its new joint venture has developed a battery system that will enable significantly more ships in the maritime and inland shipping sector to be equipped with clean e-drives for the first time. Space in ships was often too tight for the compact battery storage systems available on the market, until now. The new “Kaptein Series” power storage system has the advantage that the battery modules can be installed individually anywhere in the ship – even on the floor. Due to its disruptive technology, the new power storage solution also features the highest energy density, the lightest weight, and the fastest charging capability on the market. This makes clean e-drives for shipping easier to implement as well as more cost-efficient.

Two maritime industry experts join forces

TESVOLT Maritime Solutions has supplied battery storage systems since 2018, primarily for workboats, deep-sea applications, and aquaculture, but also for pleasure craft and the yachting industry. TESVOLT Maritime Solutions has already equipped 160 ships with environmentally friendly battery propulsion systems, including the award-winning “E-Spatz,” a working vessel of the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration. Ocean Batteries has been offering modular, safe, and powerful battery solutions since 2019. TESVOLT holds a 51% stake in the joint venture TESVOLT OCEAN. TESVOLT OCEAN presented its new “Kaptein” battery storage system at SMM, the world’s leading maritime industry trade fair, last week in Hamburg.

Longest range and fastest charging

“We’re entering the market with a best-in-class storage system, offering a technological solution for the biggest pain points of ship owners, system integrators, and shipyards,” explained Kent Thoresen, CTO of TESVOLT OCEAN. “The range of ships with electric propulsion, for instance, is still a problem for many owners. Ship spaces are often cramped, so not enough battery modules can be accommodated to achieve the desired range. At 246 Wh per liter, our new Kaptein system has the highest energy density on the market to date, meaning despite its high capacity it takes up very little space.”

Most batteries approved for use in shipping did not even have a continuous C-rate of 2 C. At 4 C, the “Kaptein” storage system offers the highest continuous C-rate available in the maritime industry to date. This means significantly shorter charging times for ship owners.

Light, safe, and individually installable

The new storage system also scores highly in terms of weight. At just 4.83 kg per kWh of storage capacity, it will be the lightest battery system for shipping on the market; batteries currently available on the market weigh at least 7 kg per kWh. A unique fire suppression system ensures maximum safety.

“We spent three years speaking intensively with customers in six focus groups about what they need. That’s why Kaptein fits their needs so well. It solves real problems in e-propulsion for ships,” added Kilian Hoffmann, CCO at TESVOLT OCEAN. “We’ve already had a huge number of inquiries about the new battery system.”

Support right from the start

“Every customer has different goals. That’s why we always tailor our battery system precisely to the individual customer. Kaptein is not an off-the-shelf product. But due to its special cell-to-module design, it’s exceptionally cost-efficient compared to the rest of the market,” said Øystein Kjæreng, CEO von TESVOLT OCEAN. “We’re a one-stop shop, offering planning, installation, and commissioning as well as monitoring, maintenance, and recycling. We want to make a significant contribution with this new product toward accelerating the equipping of shipping with clean e-drives — as simply and cost-effectively as possible.”

Competitive advantage: significant reduction in installation work

“One genuine competitive advantage of our new outdoor storage system is that it comes completely prewired. On site, all the installer needs to do is build the foundations, insert the modules and connect the storage system, so the installation work is significantly reduced,” explains Simon Schandert, CTO and co-founder of Tesvolt. “This also prevents potential errors during installation and allows specialist partners to plan their time better.”

Storage systems for all applications – even simultaneously

“For many customers, it’s important that their storage system also work for future business models. With the TPS HV 80 E, they’re equipped for the future because they can use the system not only for peak shaving and self-consumption optimisation but also for more specialist requirements, such as control of charging stations and zero feed-in – and they can run various applications in parallel,” says Schandert.

The TPS HV 80 E is also suitable for ancillary services and arbitrage trading. This means that the storage system can be charged up from the utility grid at a cheap rate and discharged later when energy is expensive. “Prediction-based charging is sure to be of particular interest to customers with their own photovoltaic systems or dynamic electricity tariffs,” adds the Tesvolt founder.

Exceptionally efficient

Technologically, the new storage container is part of the proven E series, which Tesvolt launched a year ago. Like the rest of the E series, the TPS HV 80 E includes advanced Tesvolt battery modules – 22 cells of the latest-generation Samsung SDI for extra safety. The high energy density of the battery cells makes these storage systems exceptionally economical and space-saving, with a compact casing that measures 10 or 20 feet in length and a storage capacity ranging from 80 kWh to 1,280 kWh.

The TPS HV 80 E storage system also has a fully modular design – from the battery modules to the container – which makes it especially versatile. Customers can choose between two different energy management systems, while the Sunny Tripower Storage X three-phase battery inverter from SMA ensures super fast reaction and control times and a broad usable DC voltage range. The integrated air conditioning provides cooling or heating – depending on the weather – to ensure optimum performance.

Complete support for installation partners

Tesvolt offers its installation partners a full range of digital services – from storage configuration and ordering to commissioning and after-sales support. Partners can receive training on the system and configuration, as well as support with commissioning. Tesvolt also offers a hotline for personal consultation.

Tesvolt will be presenting the new container storage system at booth 110 in hall B2 from 19 to 21 June 2024.

Schiff liegt im Hafen

First German federal work vessel with pure electric drive

PRESS RELEASE – Lutherstadt Wittenberg, 04.03.2024

E-Spatz with Tesvolt technology wins award //

The Spatz, the tried and tested work vessel of the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), was the first work vessel to be equipped with an electric drive. Tesvolt supplied the battery storage system for this and worked closely with shipping manufacturers to tailor the ship’s electric propulsion system to its needs. Now the “E-Spatz” has been awarded the title “Inland Ship of the Year”. In the coming years, 100 more work vessels in the Spatz fleet are to be equipped with zero-emission engines.

Press images are available here: https://www.tesvolt.com/en/press/e-spatz-is-barge-of-the-year.html

Flagship project for clean waterways and climate protection

“There is no alternative to the electrification of shipping on the path to cleaner waters and reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Shipping’s potential to meet climate targets is still underestimated. In fact, there are many applications for electric drives in inland navigation,” says Michael Miebach, Business Development Manager Maritime Solutions at Tesvolt. The Hansa editorial team’s “Inland Ship of the Year” award honours not only the technological achievements of the E-Spatz but also the commitment and collaboration of all the companies involved and the WSV in this pioneering project.

To tailor electric ship propulsion to the needs of the E-Spatz, Tesvolt has worked with Kadlec & Brödlin, one of the oldest marine integrators, and with Jastram, a supplier of high-quality rudder propellers. All components for the propulsion system are perfectly coordinated with each other. The electrification of the Spatz was carried out by the Bolle shipyard from Saxony-Anhalt.

One charge is enough for three days

The work vessel with its innovative propulsion system ensures traffic safety on the rivers and canals of the west German canal network. Construction and maintenance work on the waterways is just as much a part of its duties as bearing work. Unlike its diesel-powered predecessor, the E-Spatz is powered solely by two 80 kW (109 hp) electric motors. The batteries have a capacity of 980 kWh. There are seven water-cooled battery modules with a capacity of 10 kWh each arranged in 14 racks. Each of the 98 modules is constantly monitored by the battery management system. This ensures that the temperature, state of charge and health of the built-in cells is always clear. The batteries are charged at night via a shore power cable connection with a maximum output of 125 A located at the rear of the E-Spatz. Depending on the type of work, the E-Spatz can be operated for up to three days on a single battery charge.

Launch of a future-oriented fleet

With more than 600 vessels, WSV is the largest inland shipowner in Germany. The WSV currently operates around 130 vessels of the Spatz class alone, which will be fitted with zero-emission propulsion systems in the future. The first E-Spatz marks the beginning of a new generation of environmentally friendly ships.

Maximum storage capacity in a small space

“A real advantage for our shipping customers is that our energy storage systems are considerably lighter than conventional ones, thanks to their high energy density of 6.5 kg per kWh. This is particularly important for ships, as it allows a higher-capacity battery storage system to be installed. This means that ships have a correspondingly longer range and can cover further distances electrically,” says Kilian Hoffmann, Business Development Manager for Maritime Solutions at Tesvolt. Tesvolt’s DNV-certified battery storage systems are also among the safest on the market thanks to their integrated fire suppression system.

At “Eco-Day”Hithium emphasizes sustainability commitments

PRESS RELEASE – Chongqing, China, 12.12.2023:

  • Hithium reveals first small-scale product focused on creating reliable electricity access for people living in energy poverty
  • Company opens new plant to customers, industry partners, investors
  • Event offers preview of manufacturer’s other new technology //

Stationary battery manufacturer Hithium opened its new smart production plant in Chongqing, China, to visitors and employees with a daylong event focused on the company’s sustainability achievements and goals. The key focus was on the ways that Hithium is meeting its commitment to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 7. By concentrating innovations on affordability and reducing LCOS, the manufacturer aims at increasing access to energy storage and the role storage plays in the broader transition to renewable energies.

In addition to Hithium’s progress toward its broader environmental targets, the event highlighted the efficiency increases and resulting cost decreases of its smart manufacturing developments. These also underscore the company’s sustainability commitment to Goal 7, subsection 3, and its focus on improving energy efficiency. Together with the tour of its facility, Hithium also offered its Eco-Day visitors a preview of the company’s new technology, including the manufacturer’s first small-capacity cell designed specifically to lift people out of energy poverty along with a groundbreaking utility-scale product.

In his Eco-Day presentation of the company’s product roadmap and business strategy, Hithium chairman Jason Wang said: “We’re focused on making the energy transition affordable, to help accelerate the adoption of clean power. Our new technology and our battery production innovations all serve this goal. When we lower LCOS for partners, we can make energy storage more bankable for asset owners. When we lower the cost for end consumers living in energy poverty, they gain more access to more reliable clean power. For Eco-Day, we’re celebrating this progress on the production and the product fronts.”

Sneak peek: World’s first small-capacity cell designed for affordability for off-grid energy consumers

Hithium revealed a new universal 1kWh battery cell, the “Hero EE,” for use in areas where there is no reliable grid and millions of households or small businesses have only few or low-power appliances. Their basic needs can thus be met through a small-scale, affordable energy storage product. The cell can be charged with an extra low current from solar power or a local microgrid and aims to increase access to electricity for people where energy supply is not yet reliable or affordable.

With the new product, Hithium is targeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals on both the fronts, of access to affordable energy and of upgrading technology for countries where many still live in energy poverty.

Breaking out of EV-scale with first truly utility-focused battery product

As part of the company’s Eco-Day celebration, Hithium unveiled the first LFP battery design for long-duration storage of four to eight hours, called “MIC 1130Ah”. The new product, a sample of which will be available in the first quarter of 2024, will represent unprecedented new battery technology for the utility-scale energy storage market, breaking the 1000Ah barrier for the first time.

Shift to highly automated smart manufacturing delivers 25% cost reduction

Playing a central role in Hithium’s production expansion plans, the smart facility at Chongqing achieves a ca. 30% increase in efficiency over typical “Manufacturing 3.0” standards. The plant features a significantly higher level of automation that enables the company to cut the cost of battery production there by a quarter.
