Tesvolt wins international award for rural electrification

Award ceremony in Ivory Coast

Wittenberg/Germany, Abidjan/Africa, 14 March 2019 – Tesvolt has been presented with an international award for rural electrification. The German manufacturer of power storage systems for agriculture and commerce received the prize in the category Private Sector in Australia, Europe and North America for establishing a sustainable energy supply on an avocado farm in Australia. The award was presented yesterday evening during a ceremony hosted by the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) at the headquarters of the African Development Bank in Abidjan. Last year, the Australian project already won The smarter E AWARD at the Intersolar exhibition.

This award honours the most passionate and innovative players working to provide people with access to energy. Tesvolt submitted a well-rounded concept which stood out against the rest, particularly with regard to its effectiveness and potential for use in other areas,” said Guilherme Collares Pereira, head judge and ARE Vice President. The international industry organization has approximately 150 members, mostly project developers and technology providers. It has been campaigning for over ten years for low- to middle-income households in rural regions, in particular, to receive access to affordable, safe and clean energy. About 1 billion people worldwide do not have an energy supply, most of them living in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Technical challenge

We are particularly proud of this international award for rural electrification because Tesvolt holds fast to the vision of providing affordable, clean electricity to every corner of the world,” says Marcus Kruckow, Vice President of Internationalization at Tesvolt. “And we don’t just provide energy storage, we offer the entire energy solution. With the avocado farm, we were faced with the challenge of combining our lithium storage system with sodium-ion batteries – something never before achieved.”

100% self-sufficient avocado farm

The farm, located in Pemberton in the South West region of Western Australia, produces 90 tonnes of avocados a year on 5 hectares of land. Since they require a very large amount of water and sunlight to develop optimal flavour, the avocados are watered over the hot, dry Australian summer via hydraulic water pumps drawing from underground tanks. The tanks fill up with water over the very rainy winter.

Thanks to the intelligent power storage solution, the farm can now operate with 100 percent solar energy. A photovoltaic installation with a capacity of 53 kilowatt peak (kWp) covers the base load together with a 160 kWh sodium ion-based storage system. The 48 kWh Tesvolt storage system supplies the electricity for the hydraulic water pumps, which require a particularly large amount of electricity upon startup. The sodium-ion batteries are unable to absorb these peak loads as they don’t discharge fast enough. By contrast, the Tesvolt storage system charges and discharges very quickly since it is equipped with Samsung SDI’s high-efficiency prismatic lithium cells. Due to its high performance, this type of battery cell is also used in modern electric cars, for example.

About Tesvolt

Tesvolt specializes in agricultural, commercial and industrial battery storage systems. The innovative company from Lutherstadt Wittenberg in Germany produces storage systems with state-of-the-art prismatic lithium battery cells from Samsung SDI, based on nickel manganese cobalt oxide. Tesvolt storage systems function just as well at low voltage as at high voltage, and can be connected to all energy producers: sun, wind, water and combined heat and power — on-grid and off-grid. Tesvolt Receives EU Funding For High-Voltage Storage System

Brussels, Belgium/Wittenberg, Germany, 4 December 2018 – Tesvolt, a manufacturer of storage systems for industry and commerce, is to receive 2.15 million euros in EU funding. The European Union believes that Tesvolt’s high-voltage storage system has the potential to change the power storage market. The German company will now receive support under the EU’s SME instrument, enabling it to mass-produce its lithium high-voltage storage systems and launch them on the market worldwide. A total of 1,658 businesses from across Europe applied for phase II funding under the SME instrument, and 63 were successful.

Halving the costs of commercial storage systems

We’re looking for the innovators of tomorrow. We believe that Tesvolt’s high-voltage storage system is a disruptive product, as it could slash the costs of electricity storage by more than half,” says Marco Rubinato, EU Programme Officer. These costs could drop from around 18 euro cents per kilowatt hour of electricity stored to just 7 cents in the future, as soon as Tesvolt begins mass production of its high-voltage storage system. The funding will be used to set up semi-automated serial production at the company’s Wittenberg site and to market the innovative storage system worldwide. It will be provided over a period of two years.

First mass production of commercial storage systems in Europe

The EU has recognized that Germany is an important hub for battery technology. We’re delighted to have been awarded this funding and we want to use it to set up the first mass production facility for commercial storage systems in Europe,” says Daniel Hannemann, who founded the company four years ago together with Simon Schandert.

EU convinced by Tesvolt’s storage technology

It was our proprietary battery control system which really helped to convince the EU. This is what makes our storage systems especially durable and economical,” explains Simon Schandert. The battery management system ensures that the battery cells are always optimally charged and discharged. The active cell balancing is not just limited to the cells within a battery module, but also optimizes the different battery modules to fit with each other. The temperature, voltage and state of charge of each individual cell or battery module is monitored, significantly boosting the cells’ lifespan. This gives Tesvolt storage systems a service life of up to 30 years, equivalent to around 8,000 complete charge cycles with a depth of discharge (DoD) of 100 percent.

Tesvolt high-voltage storage system has been nominated for the ees AWARD

Efficient storage solution for industry and commerce

Wittenberg, 16 May 2018 – The Tesvolt high-voltage storage system has been shortlisted for the ees AWARD. The manufacturer from Wittenberg (Germany) has launched a storage system which is exceptionally economical: the TS HV 70. The levelized cost of storage (LCOS) is a mere 9 euro cents. With its outstanding total system efficiency of 92 percent and a lifespan of up to 30 years, this high-voltage storage system certainly pays off. The ees AWARD, which honours the most pioneering products for electricity storage each year, will be presented on 20 June at ees Europe, the continent’s largest exhibition for batteries and energy storage systems.

“We are delighted about the nomination – after all, the ees AWARD is the Oscars of the storage industry,” says Daniel Hannemann, Tesvolt’s Managing Director. “Our high-voltage storage system shows the market that storage systems pay off for industry and commerce.”

High overall efficiency equals economic efficiency

“A storage system’s economic efficiency essentially depends on its overall energy efficiency. Many storage system manufacturers only state the battery efficiency, even though the overall efficiency of the storage system is what really counts,” explains Simon Schandert, Director of Engineering at Tesvolt. “With 92 percent, our high-voltage storage system achieves the highest energy efficiency found in the market.” This is due to the high battery efficiency of 98 percent, combined with a highly efficient inverter, which has been especially developed for the Tesvolt high-voltage storage system by SMA Solar Technology.

Longevity equals economic efficiency

Tesvolt integrates lithium-based prismatic high energy and high-efficiency cells of the kind used in state-of-the-art electric cars. Tesvolt’s own battery management system ensures that battery cells are always charged and discharged in an ideal way. The active cell balancing is not just limited to the cells within a battery module, but the different battery modules are also optimized to fit with each other. This system is unique in the world. The Active Battery Optimizer monitors the temperature, voltage and state of charge of each individual cell or battery module, which significantly boosts the cells’ lifespan, giving the TS HV 70 a service life of up to 30 years. This is equivalent to around 8,000 complete charge cycles with a depth of discharge (DoD) of 100 percent.

The storage system is produced at the company’s headquarters in Lutherstadt Wittenberg and functions just as well with a low voltage of 48 volts as with a high voltage of 1,000 volts for stationary commercial and industrial applications.

Tesvolt will be introducing its storage systems at Intersolar Europe in Munich from 20–22 June 2018.
